Kata: Kanku dai techniques 16-17 Stance recognized: Back stance. Section 16. Foward stance. Section 17. Fyi: all open hand techniques have bunkai representing grabbing techniques or attachment techniques. _____ . Under (Oyo) or practical theory: Section 17 is a triple sequence counter defense strategy, with a knife hand to neck of opponent. . Gedan barai; block 1 Defense for low line linear strikes. This applied in technique 16 while in a back stance. . Uchi empi uke; block 2 Defense for mid (chudan) circular attacks. This is done while transitioning from back stance to forward stance. This action will by itself, remove you from the intended range being targeted. The elbow blocking here, is simply an idea of extra coverage that extends to an application were you block and over-hook your opponents arm, essentially trapping it. . Shoto age uke; block 3A (Primary application) Defense for high line (jodan) linear attacks. . Soto shoto tsuki; strike A1 (Primary application) Attack aimed at the neck of opponent. _____ . Under the (bunkai) or subjective theory: Section 17 is based off the shuri-te anti grappling theory, and is viewed by many as the less water down aspects of shotokan karate,.speaking to its direct connect with its own root systems. . 3B: secondary application; (Toritsuke-te or grabbing hand) You are grabbing the wrist or gi sleeve of your opponents outstretched striking limb. . A2: secondary application (Toritsuke-te or grabbing hand) Here you are grabbing the lapel or neck of your opponent. . A1: secondary application; Here we are striking and essentially hyper extending the elbow joint of your opponent's outstretched arm; this entirely dependant on your distance from your opponent, and the degree of bend in your own elbow when executing the technique. Note: given it is a strike, you'd have to be closer to strike the neck vs an elbow joint of an outstretched arm. Distance needs to be adjusted with the stance, not with the shuffle of feet. Also: it would be wise to understand that shotokan karate techniques are transitional counter defensives. We should always consider the techniques leading up to the section in question, as well as those afterward, if we are to better understand how and why these applications are recognized and made practical in many alternative branches of Japanese karate.. #RoninCrucibles
